Ian Goodfellow, the inventor of Generative Adversarial Networks moves to DeepMind

Generative Adversarial Networks or GANs took the world by storm when they were first presented in 2014. The world is still in awe of the achievements and capabilities of Generative Adversarial Networks. Ian Goodfellow rose to fame as the ‘inventor of Generative Adversarial Networks(or as they are commonly known as – GANs)’. He is also the lead author of The Deep Learning Book which he co-authored with Yoshua Bengio and Aaron Courville; one of the most-complete books for Deep Learning.

Ian Goodfellow recently announced his move to DeepMind on Twitter.

Ian Goodfellow who was working with Google when he created GANs has since then worked at some of the most prestigious Artificial Intelligence organizations in the world such as OpenAI, and Apple. He recently announced his move from Apple, where he was the Director of Machine Learning in the Special Projects Group to DeepMind, where he will be working as a Research Scientist.

DeepMind on the other hand also needs no introduction. DeepMind is a research organization that has had a single goal since its inception- Artificial General Intelligence, or AGI. DeepMind was started by some of the most brilliant minds in the fields of Artificial Intelligence- Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg, and Mustafa Suleyman and funded by world-renowned investors like Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, and Scott Banister to name a few before it was acquired by Alphabet Inc(the parent company of Google). However, despite all that star-studded beginning, DeepMind made headlines when it defeated one of the top-rated professional Go players in the world, Lee Sedol in 4 out of the 5 games. A task that was originally thought to be impossible for at least another decade.

Since then DeepMind has made it to the headlines several times. Most notably for AlphaFold– an artificial intelligence program that performs predictions of protein structure. Protein folding happens to be an NP-hard problem that has no known solution in polynomial time. For this reason, being able to accurately predict the shape of protein molecules can have a wide range of applications in the field of medicine.

DeepMind has been working on Generative AI models, along with other areas interesting areas in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Ian Goodfellow will likely be working on Generative models in DeepMind along with unsupervised learning and other branches of AI.
