Qiskit opens applications for Quantum Error Correction Summer School 2022

Qiskit has opened the application for Quantum Error Correction Summer School 2022. This announcement was also made by Qiskit on their Twitter handle. Read the complete article to know more about Qiskit Quantum Error Correction Summer School 2022, and how you can apply for the event.

Qiskit has been organizing summer schools in the field of Quantum Computing for over 2 years now. The first edition of the Qiskit Summer School by Qiskit was on Introduction to Quantum Computing and Quantum Hardware, whereas the second edition of the Summer School was focused to the emerging and interesting field of Quantum Machine Learning. This year, Qiskit is back with another edition of the Summer School focussed on the very important topic of Quantum Error Correction, or QEC.

However, unlike the first two editions of the Qiskit Summer Schools, this is an in person event and not a virtual one. The Summer School will be a month-long event from 5th July to 30th July 2022. The summer school is designed for students who wish to contribute to cutting edge QEC research.

The current state of Quantum Computers is such that they are affected by Decoherence and Quantum Noise. Due to this, Quantum Computers are not able to reach their full potential. Therefore finding and correcting errors in Quantum Computers is a big challenge, an important milestone that has huge implications. It is a challenge that researchers around the globe are working on. With the Quantum Error Correction Summer School, IBM and Qiskit aim to provide the next generation of QEC researchers an opportunity to study the Quantum Error Correction and use their help to solve this grand challenge. The QEC Summer Schools will have multiple talks from leading researchers in the field of QEC while also giving the students present their own work.

“The summer school will bring together the next generation of QEC researchers to participate in a series of mini-courses on both foundational topics and the latest theoretical and experimental results and offer opportunities to collaborate with others in the QEC community. The aim of the QEC Summer School is to give participants a working knowledge of QEC, as well as some of the latest results in selected areas. This will empower students to contribute to cutting-edge research that will benefit the quantum computing industry and the world” Reads the official announcement from IBM Qiskit Quantum Error Correction Summer School.

The Quantum Error Correction Summer School will have a total of 70 seats. The Quantum Error Correction Summer School will consist of both theoretical, experimental, and programming topics.

Topics and Syllabus

The QEC summer school will consist of 10 mini-courses:

  1. Three foundation theory courses
  2. Two latest theoretical advances courses
  3. Three current experimental QEC courses
  4. Two courses on QEC programming

The following will be the topics that will be covered in the QEC Summer School-

Theory

  1. QEC – Foundations
  2. Bosonic Codes – Foundations
  3. Fault Tolerance – Logical Gates
  4. Decoding – Current Directions
  5. LDPC Codes – Current Directions

Experimental

  1. Experimental QEC – Superconducting Qubits
  2. Experimental QEC – Bosonic Codes
  3. Experimental QEC – Trapped Ions

Programming

  1. Programming Decoders
  2. Programming QEC Simulations

Location and Accommodation

The 2022 IBM Quantum Error Correction Summer School will take place at the Tarrytown House Estate in Tarrytown, New York, United States of America.

All costs for accommodations, meals, and travel from local airports to the summer school location will be covered by IBM. However, the participants are expected to request funding from a sponsoring institution or researcher to cover travel from their home locations to one of the two New York City airports or Newark Liberty International.

Who all can Apply?

Most potential students will be pursuing a higher degree in a mathematical science: mathematics, physics, engineering, computer science.

Qiskit Announcement

The Quantum Error Correction Summer school has a maximum capacity of 70 participants. All candidates who meet the following criteria can apply.

Eligibility

All candidates who meet the criteria may apply. Potential participants must meet a set of eligibility requirements as outlined below-

  • Participants must be proficient in certain academic fields as outlined in the Requirements section below.
  • IBM is committed to complying with all laws that apply to our business, including U.S. export controls and economic sanctions. Content shared during the “Quantum Error Correction Summer School 2022” may be subject to the U.S. Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and prohibited for release to citizens or nationals of any country in EAR Country Groups D:1, E:1, or E:2 or the Crimea Region of Ukraine (collectively, “Prohibited Countries”).
  • Participants must be fully vaccinated and up to date on any boosters against COVID-19 and comply with all U.S. laws and regulations for individuals entering the United States.
  • Lectures will be in English so participants must be proficient in English.
  • Participants must be 18 years or older.

Requirements

The following are the requirements outlined by Qiskit for participation in the QEC Summer School.

  • In most circumstances accepted individuals will either be final year undergraduate students, Masters degree students or Ph.D. students although exceptions can be made for exceptional applicants.
  • Applicants must have a minimum theoretical background. The applicant must be comfortable with the mathematics and physics used in Nielsen and Chuang’s Quantum Computation and Quantum Information. This includes linear algebra, and basic group theory along with a basic understanding of quantum circuits and quantum mechanics for quantum computation.
  • Applicants must submit contact details of the individual who will write their letter of recommendation. The letter of recommendation must state:
    • that the applicant has the required theoretical requirements
    • their relationship with that applicant
    • that they strongly recommend the applicant attend the summer school
    • that the applicant is either studying quantum error correction or has a strong interest in studying quantum error correction (theory or experimentation)
  • Applicants must provide a curriculum vitae.
  • Applicants must provide a description of any prior research or results demonstrating their technical and research skills.
  • Applicants will need to state how the summer school would be useful to them and their future aspirations.
  • Summer school applications are now open. On March 3, 2022 the selection process will begin. Applications will be accepted after March 3 but will only be considered if space is available.
  • School participants will be responsible to obtain appropriate visas as needed to enter the United States of America. The summer school can provide a letter stating that an individual has been accepted into the program and that the school will provide full local expenses.
  • Applicants will be responsible for their travel costs from their location to one of the two New York City airports or Newark Liberty International. Applicants should request travel funding from their sponsor or educational institution. Further funds or accommodations may also be available for a select number of participants in need of travel assistance or with circumstances preventing them from traveling to New York.

Application Process

The applications for the Quantum Error Correction Summer school applications are open. The selection process will begin on March 3, 2022. After March 3, 2022 applications will be accepted but will only be considered if space is available.

To apply for the Quantum Error Correction Summer School 2002, the students should have completed the following-
